Articles: Holiday In Thailand

Holiday In Thailand
By: Joe Goertz

Thailand means "the land of the free" lies in the heart of Southeast Asia.
It is one of the most beautiful places in the world and one can only
experience the exotic beauty of the place when you get there. The fresh
air kissing your face when you walk on the beach, the mouth watering
dishes and the rush and madness in the market is something you will
perhaps not get to see anywhere else.

Thailand's geographical region is divided into four parts:

The mountains and forests are in the north. You can find fascinating
handicrafts and multicolored orchids.

The central part where you will find paddy field, farms and all kinds of
fruits.
The northeast plateau is famous for its rich archaeological and
anthropological heritage.
You will find tropical islands in the southern peninsula. The people on
this place are involved in fishing, rubber cultivation and tin mining.

The people of Thailand are very friendly and hospitable. This place is
rich in monumental heritage and famous for its beaches. Thailand is an
ideal holiday destination for all, from those who are looking for a
romantic holiday, to shoppers to the food lovers as you get to taste
varieties of sea food, down in the street to the most expensive
restaurants. It offers something to every traveler.

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand.Bankok means "city of angels", it is a
small Thailand in itself. It is the centre of commercial, industrial and
cultural activities. If you are looking for peace and simplicity you can
visit the Buddhist temples and the amazing part is it stands by side by
side with nightclubs and cafés. You can see monks walking in their red
robes all over the place and one can only wonder how they can attain such
peacefulness in this rush and hectic world.

Another main attraction in Thailand is Phuket known for its exotic island.
The nightlife there is lively with its multicuisine restaurants and bars
always filled with tourists. But of course if are looking for a quite meal
you can do that by going to the right place.

Chiang Mai is another place which is a combination of modern city life and
the old village charm. There are elaborate temples and cultural relics
some of which are very old close to 700 years. On the top of the mountain
is Doi Suthep monastery which overlooks the fertile valley embracing
Chiang Mai.The local night bazaar is the favorite shopping place for
tourists where you can get hand made local stuff, tribal wears and also
latest modern junks for a good bargain.

You will have no problem communicating as most of the hotels, restaurants
and tourist places speak English and other European languages. There are
various modes of transportation. You can either hire a taxi to go around
the city, or take the city bus .There is also something called Tuk-Tuk, a
three wheeler. You would definitely enjoy the open air ride on this three
wheeler and for longer destinations there are trains always running to all
the places.

Thailand is blessed with three seasons-summers from February to May, Rainy
season from June to October with plenty of sunshine and the cold season
from November to January. A lot of people go for holidays in Thailand
during December and January as it is the perfect season to relax and
party. Thailand becomes a mini world as people from all over the world
come here for holidays during this season.

Articles: What You Need To Know About – Thailand Travel

What You Need To Know About – Thailand Travel
By: Mansi Aggarwal

Thailand is one of those destinations, which is forever teeming with
tourists. The country holds an exclusive position in the hearts of all
vacationers for the place has much more to offer than anyone can expect.
Thailand lies in the South East Asia region and can be taken to be the
land of Buddha. Almost all the Buddha devotees desire to visit this
country once in their lifetime. This is due to the fact that Thailand has
some of the unique and exquisite Buddha temples where perfect tranquility
prevails.

A Concise Review of a Seemingly Interminable Place

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is worth visiting spot. This sacred
temple has Buddha statue that is 65 centimeter elevated and is entirely
made of jasper quartz or jade. While the jade goes back to 15th century,
the murals on the walls of the compound can be traced back to 18th
century. The visitors can take a look at The Royal Thai Decorations and
the Coin Pavilion. All in all the sanctity of the temple speaks through
itself and the ambiance is enough to enchant the visitors.

Along with Temple of Emerald Buddha, several other grand Buddha temples
can be seen once you move into the city of Bangkok. Bangkok, the capital
city of Thailand has proved its worth across the globe. This metropolis
has everything to offer to its visitors. From wonderful museums to
thrilling nightlife, Bangkok has it all. The bustling city owns the
largest South East Asian museum called The National Museum. National
Museum has a gathering of various things like Thai art from old to
contemporary, musical instruments, weapons, woodcarving, ceramics,
clothing and sacred Buddha images.

Visitors that come to Bangkok never miss the opportunity to encounter
Vinmanmek Teak Mansion that is supposed to be the largest teak building in
the world. The Royal Elephant Museum and Dusuit Zoo are perfect places to
have some learning with fun.

The Wat Pho temple near the temple of Emerald Buddha in Bangkok is perhaps
the oldest and the largest of all Buddha temples there. The Wat Pho temple
is known for its 46 meter long statue of reclining Buddha and the largest
collection of Buddhas in the country. A refreshing massage therapy is done
at this place that too attracts a lot of people.

Finally when it comes to shopping, Bangkok has it all. There are ample of
markets here that will serve you with all the things of your necessity.
The Chatuchak Market or The Weekend Market (that is open on Saturdays and
sundaes only), the Pak Khlong market and markets in Chinatown and Phahurat
district are particularly quite famous.

The Thonburi region resting on the west bank of river Thonburi has always
gathered attention due to different reasons. The Taksin Monument that has
a statue of Thailand's eminent king Taksin which is a delight to watch.
The Royal Barges Museum that has a fantastic collection of boats, the
outstanding one being the king's personal barge –The Golden Swan is
definitely a pull in Thonburi.

Buddhist stupas area centre of attraction at Ayuthaya, a city that lies to
the north of Bangkok. The oldest and largest temple here is the Wat Phra
Si Sanphet, another famous temple is Wat No Phra Meru that has a green
stone Buddha statue inside. The Ayuthaya and the Chantharakasen are the
two significant national museums. The Lopburi and the Kanchanaburi town in
the Central Thailand region is a host to a lot many tourists every year.

In the Southeastern Thailand region is situated the Ko Chang National Park
that is crammed by people due to the various activities like elephant
riding, diving, snorkeling etc. and also to enjoy the wildlife in this
area. The Rayong Province has a set of exotic beaches along with the Khao
Chamao-Khao Wong National Park that has striking limestone mountains,
caves, cliffs and waterfalls including impressive wildlife. Pattaya is
another eventful beach spot located 150 kilometers away from Bangkok.

The Northern Thailand is bedecked by the Lamphun Province that has
numerous historical temples, Doi Khun Tan National Park, the Lampang
Province that grounds the Wat Phra That Lampang Luang temple which is
considered to be one of the most beautiful temples in Thailand and there
is also the famous Thai Elephant Conservation Center which provides acre
for sick elephants, animal shows and tourist exhibits from time to time.
The Sukhothai Province is important for its Ramkhamhaeng National Park.

The Isan Region of Northeastern Thailand has the renowned Khao Yai
National Park, which is a home for innumerable wild animals and the Phanom
Rung Historical Park.

Few places at the Thailand's Southern Coasts like Phetchaburi city, the
Southern Gulf Region (known for marine life and water sports) and the
Andaman Coast are everlastingly meant for vacationing in Thailand.

The Best Way To Avoid The Dangers Of Bird Flu (Avian) "Look After Your Health"

The Best Way To Avoid The Dangers Of Bird Flu (Avian)
By: Alfred Jones

Look After Your Health.

The threat of a Bird Flu Pandemic.

The threat to the world from Bird Flu is more serious now, than it was
when I wrote my first article on the subject in May, 2005. entitled "Will
Avian Flu Become Pandemic" since then it has spread to numerous other
countries, but, thankfully at this stage it has not, as yet, mutated to a
strain that can transfer from Human to Human.

It is so easy for this virus to mutate, it can happen as simply as a
person catching Bird Flu from poultry or birds, when that person, has
already caught one of the more common strains of Influenza.
This could enable the Bird Flu virus to then cause a pandemic outbreak of
this deadly disease throughout the world.

History of the Bird Flu and its Spread.

It first started in South Korea at a chicken farm in 2003, a couple of
months or so later, it was detected in Vietnam, then an outbreak was found
in chickens in Indonesia, Thailand confirms the death of a six year old
boy, this was the first known death from Bird Flu.

China also has problems and Malaysia has found the virus in chickens, near
the Thailand border.

This year, 2005, Bird Flu has been found in ducks in the Philippines,
Japan has had an outbreak in chickens, then it was also found in Russia.

In October, 2005 it was discovered in Turkey and Romania, so you can see
that it is spreading across the globe, slowly but surely.

The very latest is that it has now been discovered in Greece.

It is spread at this stage by birds, mainly migratory birds that fly north
or south from the Asian region, where they can take it to Russia and
Europe, or in the other direction, south to Australia, New Zealand and the
Pacific region.

The European Union has warned that there should not be any panic, though
it has told the 25 nations that make up the Union to start stockpiling
supplies of anti viral drugs. It has been confirmed in nearly all cases
the strain of virus is the highly virulent and lethal H5N1.

In London, it has been confirmed that Britain is at risk and they have
suggested that all people that could be vulnerable, should consider having
normal Flu injections.
The United States Senate, on September 29, 2005, voted to provide almost
$US4 billion to purchase a stockpile of the two anti viral drugs.

Future Prospects

Professor Ian Frazer of Brisbane, Australia, who with his research team,
after many years of heartache, trials and tribulations, have announced
that they have now perfected a vaccine that will prevent Cervical Cancer
and this vaccine should be available in 2006, this is a world breakthrough
and a historic discovery, he now is thinking of turning his talents to the
H5N1 virus, he and many of his colleagues are convinced that it is only a
matter of time before this virus will start attacking humans and cause a
pandemic.

It has been estimated that the death toll throughout the world, if this
pandemic should start, could be as high as 40 million people.

Currently, humans are catching the virus from birds that have the
infection, through their saliva or faeces, which when dry can be inhaled
by humans.

The authorities state emphatically that it can not be transmitted through
eating poultry.

What Can You Do

It is recommended by a number of authorities that you should consider
having the normal human flu vaccine.

There are two drugs available that can help, but are in short supply, also
they are quite expensive, Tamiflu and Relenza, very recent reports, even
suggest that they might not be good enough to help if the situation
becomes pandemic, because they have not yet been tested. We can but hope
that they are more efficient than the predictions.

Take all the sensible normal precautions. There are a lot of you out there
that are bird lovers, myself included, but remember that birds can carry
the virus in their gut, without any ill effect to themselves, so, don't
get up too close and personal with birds, never mind how much you love
them.

Your Immune System, this is your natural defence against all illnesses and
diseases. Try to ensure that you Immune System is functioning as
efficiently as possible.

Make sure that what you eat and drink is natural and as nutritious as you
can make it.

The Healing Properties Of Rubies

The Healing Properties Of Rubies
By: Sher Matsen

Rubies have long been thought to have healing properties in treating both
the blood and matters of the heart. When you say the word ruby you
immediately visualize the colorful images of this stone, as well as an
emotional response of passion, romance, and power. Yes that's the power
and the beauty of a ruby! The deep rich color of the ruby ranges from
fiery orange red to deep purple red. This rare gem is one of the most
expensive gems and one of the most sought after.

The ruby has a history steeped in mystery and medicine. For centuries it
has been used to cure and protect. Ancient cultures believed the ruby
could cure ailments of the digestive system, energize the blood, and treat
the heart. Warriors wore the ruby into battle because of its protective
qualities.

The ruby as a gemstone for jewelry has a very interesting history. The
crown of Charles IV of Luxembourg from the 1300s held a gem quality ruby
that was a whopping 250 carats. The Smithsonian is home to a 137 carat
cabochon star ruby. The most expensive ruby ever sold at auction was a
15.97 carat stone that sold for $3.63 million in 1988. No matter their
size or value all can agree that the ruby is a powerfully beautiful gem.

If you are in the market to buy a ruby [rubies] you should buy the best
quality gem you can afford. Don't go for size go for quality. You'll not
be disappointed. Rubies are treated with heat to enhance their color. Look
for rubies that are a deep fiery red with not too much purple hue. The
more visible purple the less the value. Almost all quality rubies have
inclusions, although they will not be visible to the naked eye, so you'll
need to examine under a loope. When purchasing your ruby look for a clear
stone with few inclusions. If you have to choose between good color and
more inclusions or poor color and few inclusions go for the "best color.
The cut of the ruby is important. A good cut will make the ruby look like
it is glowing with a deep fire. Inspect the stone under good lighting to
ensure there are no chips or scratches.

The different geographical sources of the ruby each produce specific
characteristics, colors, and qualities. Burma is famous for producing the
greatest amount of top quality rubies in a fine, clear, deep red. Burma is
the most important source of rubies today. Thailand is known for dark red
to brownish rubies. Ceylon [Sri Lanka] is known for medium to light
rubies. Africa is known for small purplish red stones.

The ruby is steeped in history. Ruby is July's birthstone and is named the
King of Gems. It's history is recorded as far back as the Bible and
ancient Sanskrit writings. The name ruby is derived from the Latin word
for red – rubrum. It is the sister to the sapphire from the corundum
family which is a crystal structure composed of aluminum oxide. Red
corundum is called ruby. All other colors are part of the sapphire family.
Ruby is the most valuable member of the corundum family. In fact large
rubies have been known to bring more at auction than the most flawless
diamonds. This is because of the rarity of gem quality ruby stone.

If you are in the market for a ruby be certain to follow the guidelines
provided in this article. Rubies are also being grown in a laboratory and
are becoming available in the market in limited quantities. These grown
rubies are of identical composition, hardness, and brilliance to natural
rubies. Synthetic rubies are also available for a fraction of the cost. So
for those of us with more limited pocket books we may have to look at
purchasing a synthetic or lab grown ruby. No one can dispute the beauty
and mystery of the beautiful ruby gem stone!

Thailand Festivals

Thailand Festivals
By Pauline Go

Are you game for a little bit of sport and a spark of adventure? Are you ready to backpack and set off some place where you can relax in your own way; be it visiting temples, sightseeing, or indulging in festivals?

Well, then get ready to set off and experience the beautiful and the magical Land of Smiles, as Thailand is fondly called.

If your are in the mood for fun and frolic, then you can choose the month of April or May to visit Thailand. The Thai joyously celebrate the New Year or the Songkran festival by splaying and splashing water at each other. It is considered to be an auspicious festival and water is poured on images of Buddha. It is believed by doing so water will continue to flow even during the summers and the dry season.

In the month of May, the harvesting and the sowing festival is celebrated and marks the beginning of the rice-planting season. Such is the fervor of the festival, that to commemorate the rice-planting season, the Rocket Festival is held. Here bamboo and gunpowder are blended to make a volatile mixture. This is done to send a message to the sky to send rain during the rice seasons.

If you are a vegetarian or love vegetarian food, then September and October is the ideal month to visit Thailand. During this time, the Buddhists eat an array of vegetarian food for nine days. Another interesting festival that is held in November is the Elephant Roundup where people watch elephants playing football or participating in tug-of-war. In the month of November candle-lit floats are cast into the water to herald good fortune in the coming year. It is a beautiful sight to see thousands of candle-lit floats bobbing up and down in the water.

The Best Time to Travel to Thailand.

The Best Time to Travel to Thailand
By Chris Sanderson

Probably the most common question any foreigner living in Thailand will hear from people planning to visit the Kingdom is "When is the best time to come to Thailand"...not an easy question to answer without knowing "why" a person wants to come to Thailand.

There are basically three seasons in Thailand (though of late the cold season seems to have gone missing), the seasons are, The Hot, The Wet and The Cold. Cold being a rather subjective description though, the shots of emergency blankets being handed out in the northern provinces when it drops to a chilly 10 degrees...that's 10 degrees Celsius. So what does each season offer.

The Hot
March to June : The hottest month is April when even the geckos stay inside and most expats look outside at lunch time and decide to not eat rather than melt on the walk to a food stall. The Hot season is beach season, if that's your thing then this is the time to come to Thailand, guaranteed sun sun sun all day long day after day. For Trekkers you might find this to be a tad hot to go trudging up hills unless mounted on an elephant, sun stroke and dehydration are high up on the list of things to beware of. Bangkok turns into a molten vat of pollution as the winds die and the smog just hangs around choking up the oxygen. Hotels are at their most expensive during the hot season and weekends will see many of the mid range ones fully booked.

The Wet
July to November : The change over from hot to wet is the worst time to be in Thailand regardless of what you're into. It's Hot, it's wet and the humidity is ruthless. You'll be desperate to take three showers a day at a minimum...living in a shower for a month might not be a bad plan. If you can imagine living in a sauna for a month then you get the right picture of Thailand at the start of the wet season...unless you're in Bangkok, then get in a sauna and pipe your car exhaust into the sauna to get the right idea...hmmm yummy. Then thankfully the skies really open up, the wind blows and things freshen up . Rain is pretty much a guaranteed feature on a daily basis and usually kicks off in the afternoon, sometimes lasting all night, Floods are common along with power cuts. So why come to Thailand now...the cost.... hotels are empty, tourists are away, it's a great time to see Thailand with fewer tourists than usual and get the best prices as even the Thai people stay home at the weekends.

The Cold
December to February : Thailand freezes over, snow falls from the sky and ice-skating is the nations most popular sport...well if you watched the TV or the Thai people running around dressed in winter jackets, boots, gloves and scarves you may start to think it's true.. in Bangkok it can drop to a bone chilling 15 degrees Celsius at night, and up north it has on occasions dropped down to 2 degrees, the south gets off much lighter and you can escape with a body warmer and a bobble hat. Thailand again is swarming with tourists who have come to take advantage of the cool weather to do see Thailand without burning up. This is the best time of the year to actually "see" Thailand, you'll enjoy seeing the sights and touring the cities and trekking will be at its best. Again prices will be up and hotels fairly full.

So in a nutshell the best time to come to Thailand is the time that suits what you want to do, Trekkers and Tanners will have different needs, those looking for bargains will have different needs. Just add that there are occasional down pours even in the hottest parts of the year and even the wet season can be dry for a week or more.....but leave your skis at home...there will be no snow.....guaranteed.

Thailand - The Land of Smiles and Cheap Travel

Thailand - The Land of Smiles and Cheap Travel
By Richard Chapo

Thailand is known as the land of smiles, which is amazing considering the traffic jams in Bangkok. For budget travelers, Thailand simply can’t beat on price alone.

Thailand

Thailand is an odd mix of contrasts. It can be extremely stressful while trying to get around in Bangkok and gloriously relaxing while laying on practically any of the beaches that populate the coast of the country. Regardless of the situation, the Thais have a habit and custom or smiling regardless of what you ask or how you ask it.

Beaches

The beaches of Thailand need no introduction. Used as the setting for hundreds of movies, they come in a variety of styles. The beaches of Phuket and Phi Phi fall along the lines of traditional beach resort areas like you might find in a place such as Cancun, Mexico or Tamarindo, Costa Rica. On the other end of the scale, you can find more rustic beach areas in places like the island of Ko Chang where you’ll have a few beach bungalows, a couple of bars and one or two stores. If you’re looking for a little of both styles, just ask around.

Da North

Infatuated with the beach life, many people fail to head up country when in Thailand. This is a mistake as the north is the host to such locations as the city of Chang Mai, the Summer Palace of the King of Thailand and interesting little villages. For the outdoor enthusiasts, rafting, hiking and mountain biking are very popular and widely available.

Prices

If you’re on a budget, Thailand is a perfect travel destination. For some reason, flights to Thailand are particularly cheap with my recent flight on Korean Airlines running roughly $650 round trip. Once in country, your money will go a long, long way.

I think a note of caution is need at this point. Please beware. If you decide to take a trip to Thailand, you won’t want to come back to your native country. You will, however, definitely come back to Thailand!

The Sights of Bangkok in Thailand

One of the most popular destinations in Asia to visit over recent years has been Thailand.

This of course has also coincided with the booming popularity of Thai cuisine around the world. Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand, is the main entry point where the vast majority of tourists to Thailand will use.

Bangkok is a very interesting city because in addition to the usual modern buildings of offices, hotels and shopping centers, there are also about 400 exotic Thai temples that seem to stick out among the urban landscape.

There are Thai citizens on the streets dressed in modern business clothing as well as Buddhist monks in saffron robes. Yet this is what part of Thailand is. The traditional mixed in with the modern.

In fact, it’s the traditional attractions that make Thailand so magical. The temples are sights that one just cannot see in the western world. They are like objects that popped out of an Asian fairy tale.

Like many other large Asian cities, Bangkok is congested with traffic, people and pollution. In fact, the air can be bad enough that there are locals wearing surgical masks in the streets. With an average annual temperature of 28 degrees Celsius or 83 degrees Fahrenheit, it can be somewhat uncomfortable outside for some tourists, especially those from northern climates. Also beware that there will be people on the streets who will try to hustle tourists and direct them to their own businesses and tours. But unlike places in the Caribbean, Thais are polite and not aggressive people. For example, once upon arrival at the international airport, there will be people within the terminal including the ones at the booths who will be offering taxi transportation to your hotel.

Although these are legit, they will charge a premium compared to the taxis waiting outside the terminal. There is a similar situation at the hotels. The taxis waiting right outside the main hotel entrances do seem to quote more than those waiting on the side streets just further down. The three-wheeled ‘tuk tuk’ vehicles also vary a lot so it may be wise to ask for quotes from a few drivers rather than taking the first one you see. The tuk tuks are a fun ride by the way so they should be experienced at least once while in Bangkok. The city also has various public buses and river taxis which are long boats used on the river canal system. A nice way to spend some time is to take a ride on one of these river taxis to cruise the canals which some refer to as the ‘Venice of the East’.

The Grand Palace is probably the most visited attraction in Bangkok. This complex is surrounded by walls built in 1783 and contains government offices, royal residences monuments and the Emerald Buddha Chapel. The Royal Chapel which contains the Emerald Buddha is the monarch’s private chapel. The Buddha itself is actually a one piece jade sitting on top of a golden altar. It’s not a large Buddha but it is very special. Apparently, they change the Buddha’s clothing which is also made of gold on a seasonal basis. There are numerous monuments on the grounds that are dedicated to past monarchs. Walls with large mythological scenes are displayed throughout. The buildings and monuments within the Grand Palace have some very striking colors including golds and greens.

Gold color is used quite a lot and the distinctively curved Thai roofs on the buildings are very detailed. Equally stunning are some of the interiors of these buildings with their magnificent rooms and halls used for different ceremonies and events. Some of these halls have special royal altars.

One temple not to miss is Wat Pho which is the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. It features a giant Buddha lying on its side. Even the soles of this Buddha’s feet have very intricately detailed designs. Other nice temples to see are Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) and Wat Benchamabophit.

The Wat Pho temple has traditional Thai massage services which are very popular among tourists. Other temples such as Wat Mahathat and Wat Parinayok also have Thai massages available. The Royal Barges or long boats which are used during ceremonies on the river are also nice to see. The details put into decorating these boats are just remarkable.

For wildlife enthusiasts, there’s the Pasteur Institute’s Snake Farm where poisonous snakes are fed daily and visitors can watch handlers milk cobras for their venom. There is also the world’s largest Crocodile Farm. The national sport of Thai kickboxing can be seen at two different stadiums in Bangkok. Both the Ratchadamnoen and Lumphini stadiums feature events throughout the week on different days. Thai theatre and traditional dance are very interesting to watch as cultural entertainment. These can be seen at theatres as well as some of the top hotels in the city.

Bangkok has some good shopping opportunities especially for jewelry, handicrafts and textiles including silks as well as cottons. As in other locations in Asia, vendors in the streets will expect some bargaining of prices where the retail stores have fixed prices. Just like in Hong Kong, Bangkok has many custom tailors who can make suits, shirts and dresses for clients within 24 hours. Some will even delivery the finished clothing to your hotel free of charge.

There are some general guidelines of etiquette in Thailand that should be followed by all visitors. The Thai royal family is revered in this country so no outsider should ever make any even slightly negative remarks about the country’s monarchy. Temples should not be entered unless one is covered with long pants or skirts. Shorts and shoulderless tops are not permitted in temples. Footwear is always removed prior to entering any temple. Images and statues of Buddha, even postcards, are considered sacred in Thailand so one should never climb on one or do anything that will show disrespect. Public displays of affection between men and women are also frowned upon.

Of course this seems to be a complete contradiction to Bangkok’s famous red light and adult entertainment districts such as Patpong. But this is yet another example of the contrast that’s found in Thailand.

The attractions in Bangkok warrant a few days stay in the city before heading out to other parts of Thailand where there’s much less pollution and more beautiful natural scenery. Bangkok has good air connections with other Asian destinations as well so it can easily be fit into a larger tour of Asia.
